Meeting the requirements of NFPA 1901-2009, the
new Vehicle Data Recorder (VDR) collects essential data
for your training needs. Reviewing the information is
made easy with an intuitive computer application.
Apply this data to your training programs to
improve response times, driver awareness and seat
belt safety.
Frequently Asked Questions
Vehicle Data Recorder
-
Does it come with a USB interface?
The VDR itself comes with a Deutsch connector for ease of installation into
the vehicle by the OEM. A 3 foot USB cable (0L40-2597-00) is available
from Weldon which will plug into the Deutsch connector.
-
Do I need another interface product
or does it work as a stand alone module?
Weldon's Vehicle Data Recorder (VDR) will function, in conjunction with the
Occupant Restraint Indicator (ORI), as a standalone unit. The VDR may also be
installed to work with other vehicle networking systems, including
Weldon’s V-MUX system.
-
In which type of vehicles may it be installed?
All custom and commercial truck chassis that have an existing SAE J1939 CAN
vehicle network broadcasting information pertaining to Vehicle Speed, Engine
RPM, Throttle Position, and ABS Event Status.
-
What do I need to add it to my fire truck?
Four things are required to install this onto a vehicle:
- Vehicle Data Recorder (VDR) – This is required to tie the inputs into the system as well as
store the data.
- If the vehicle will have more than 6 seats, you will need an
Expansion Module to add up to an additional 8 seats for a total of
14 seats and belts.
- Occupant Restraint Indicator (ORI) - This will display the seat status information as required by
NFPA 1901-2009.
- If this vehicle has Weldon’s V-MUX system with a Vista III display
in the driver’s or commander’s seat positions, then the ORI is not
required as the Vista III can be programmed to display the seat
status information.
- Seats and Belts that contain switches to provide feedback to the system.
- Connectors, pins, and wires as shown in the VDR Data Sheet.
-
Now that I’ve got my 6444 VDR and 6204 ORI, where are the connectors?
Connectors are purchased separately.
- (1) Weldon #0L40-2597-00 communications cable, computer USB port to main VDR port.
- Additionally:
Vehicle-side harness connectors (from Ladd):
- (50ft spool) Weldon # 0L20-1600-51 twisted pair communications wire with shield
- (user select) 20 AWG stranded hook-up wire
Occupant Restraint Indicator
-
Do I need another interface product or does
it work as a stand alone module?
The Occupant Restraint Indicator (ORI) requires Weldon’s
Vehicle Data Recorder (VDR) to be used.
-
Do I need a special seat or seat belt in my truck for the indicator to work?
The Seat Occupied and Seat Belted inputs into the VDR can be programmed
for either Normally Opened or Normally Closed switches. They can be
programmed to read Ground or vBatt signals.
-
For this device to work with the VDR do I need a special interface?
